Grey’s Anatomy midseason return will depict unprecedented elevator moment

Grey’s Anatomy will break new ground — in the elevators! — during tonight’s midseason premiere.

Executive producer Krista Vernoff tells EW exclusively that viewers should expect to see something that’s never happened before in the Grey Sloan lifts.

“The elevators are iconic, and they certainly represent so many things on Grey’s Anatomy,” Vernoff says. “There is so much history. We wanted to wink at the history but not step on it or mirror it. We wanted to do something new with the elevators. And we did. It’s fun, its exciting, it’s dramatic, it’s sexy!”

In case you’ve forgotten, the fall finale of Grey’s — which is currently in its 15th season — ended with Meredith (Ellen Pompeo) and DeLuca (Giacomo Gianniotti) trapped in an elevator after the electricity goes out. If that’s not enough, Teddy (Kim Raver), Owen (Kevin McKidd), and Amelia (Caterina Scorsone) are also stuck in a lift, as are Helm (Jaicy Elliot) and Bailey (Chandra Wilson) with a patient.

“We spend a good portion back in those elevators,” teases Vernoff about Thursday’s episode.

Vernoff recently learned that she will have to write three additional episodes for season 15. She’s pretty happy about it, too.

“Our ratings are so strong across all platforms right now,” Vernoff says. “We are ABC’s number-one show, therefore they wanted more episodes. Their schedule allowed for it. I was actually excited because we had one episode that was sort of a centric episode that I didn’t know where I was going to have room to tell it this season. Now we get to tell it!”

Grey’s Anatomy airs Thursdays at 8 p.m. ET on ABC.
