In the past 24 hours, EA Games’ in-development open-world Star Wars project — the one first announced in 2014 through Visceral Games — seemingly fell apart as reports came out about plans to instead pursue a smaller release within the studio. EA Games has since addressed the chatter, albeit with a rather cryptic statement.
“There’s been speculation overnight about one of our Star Wars projects,” an EA spokesperson said. “As a natural part of the creative process, the great work by our team in Vancouver continues and will evolve into future Star Wars content and games. We’re fully committed to making more Star Wars games, we’re very excited about Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order from Respawn, and we’ll share more about our new projects when the time is right.”
EW requested EA Games to clarify the statement further but has yet to receive a response.
Creative director Amy Hennig and EA Motive’s Jade Raymond were originally attached to the untitled Star Wars game, described as “a story-based, linear adventure game.” Then, Visceral Games, through which the title was being developed, closed its doors in 2017 and EA Vancouver took over.
“We will maintain the stunning visuals, authenticity in the Star Wars universe, and focus on bringing a Star Wars story to life,” EA relayed in a written blog post at the time. “Importantly, we are shifting the game to be a broader experience that allows for more variety and player agency, leaning into the capabilities of our Frostbite engine and reimagining central elements of the game to give players a Star Wars adventure of greater depth and breadth to explore.”
According to Kotaku, the game was codenamed Orca and described as “a scoundrel or bounty hunter who could explore various open-world planets and work with different factions across the Star Wars universe.” Orca was reportedly scrapped “in favor of a smaller-scale Star Wars project” in order to deliver something to fans earlier.
Last time we checked, there’s still a Star Wars game coming out this year. Respawn Entertainment announced Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order, following “a surviving Padawan” during “the Dark Times when the Jedi are being hunted,” at last year’s E3 Expo. Details, including a specific release date beyond the general 2019 window, are still scarce.
