First-time Oscar nominee Richard E. Grant has seemingly won over a very important Academy member: Barbra Streisand.
The 61-year-old Can You Ever Forgive Me? actor — who received his debut Oscar nod last week for his performance as the devilishly charming conman in Marielle Heller’s Lee Israel biopic — tweeted Tuesday about an emotional exchange with Babs that unfolded after he shared a selfie taken outside the Funny Girl star’s home.
“As a lifelong fan of someone you’ll understand what it meant for me to take this snap outside the home of [Barbra Streisand],” the Swaziland-born Grant wrote. “Asked Security for permission & he replied ‘It’s a public road, but thanks for asking’ Wrote her this letter when I was 14. My wife is very understanding!”
The attached letter sees a teenage Grant expressing his admiration for Babs and offering her a free stay at his family’s South African home to escape the bustle of her fame.
Streisand later replied to the letter on her Twitter account, thanking Grant for the “wonderful” letter while praising the actor’s “terrific” performance opposite Melissa McCarthy in Can You Ever Forgive Me? — which also scored Academy Award nods for McCarthy’s performance and the Nicole Holofcener/Jeff Whitty-penned script.
Grant then shared his reaction to Streisand’s response, tweeting that he was overwhelmed upon reading Babs’ words.
“My pal Nicole Wilcox took this photo as my daughter read me [Barbra Streisand’s] tweet/response to a letter I sent her 47 yrs ago,” he shared alongside a photo of himself tearing up over the interaction. “Am completely crinkle faced & overcome with emotion. My ‘Message in a bottle’ miracle.”
Streisand isn’t the only celebrity to have made Grant cry in recent weeks, as the performer admittedly spent Oscar nominations morning crying tears of joy alongside his Can You Ever Forgive Me? costar.
“I’m just absolutely astonished. I just spoke to Melissa and we were both crying, so I feel very emotional right now. It’s so beyond anything I could have ever imagined,” Grant told EW on Jan. 22, shortly after the Academy named him one of five Best Supporting Actor nominees. “I was sitting [with] my daughter at a restaurant…. She had the live feed on her iPhone. She had one earplug in and I had the other; That’s how we got the news! We both burst into tears. I think people at the tables around us thought we had some tragic news. We got free lunch and drinks, so I’m grateful.”
