Chris Cornell’s children accept his posthumous Grammy: ‘He would be proud and honored’

Twenty-four years after his last Grammy win, late rocker Chris Cornell won Best Rock Performance, a trophy accepted by his children.

“Thank you all so much,” said his son Christopher, 13, onstage during the non-televised portion of the ceremony. “I never thought we’d be standing here without my dad, and I’m sure he would be proud and honored. He was known for many things. He is a rock icon, the godfather of grunge and the creator of a movement whose contribution to music history made a lasting impact across genres and generations. He was also one of the greatest poets of his time, whose voice, soaring unforgettable vocals, made him the voice of a generation. While he touched the hearts of millions, the most important thing he is known for, to us, is for being the greatest father.”

Added Cornell’s 14-year-old daughter, Toni, “His voice was his vision and his music was his peace. Thank you so much to the recording academy, Universal Music Group, Ron Laffitte, Brent Smith, Michael Cooper, and thank you to our mom: his love, his muse, and his savior, who continues to carry out our father’s legacy. And a huge thank you to his fans for the loud love and support. This is for you Daddy, and we love you so much.”

In May 2017, Cornell, the legendary frontman of Soundgarden, died by suicide at 52. Cornell’s Grammy win on Sunday is for “When Bad Does Good,” a previously unreleased track.
