Jennifer Tilly reacts to Child’s Play remake: ‘Ummm…no’

In the Chucky movies, the Jennifer Tilly-voiced killer doll Tiffany is very much a speaks-her-mind kind of gal. The same can be said of Tilly herself, particularly it seems when it comes to the subject of the upcoming remake of 1988’s Child’s Play, the film which introduced the world to Tiffany’s paramour, the similarly homicidal Chucky.

“New ‘Chucky’ movie?” Tilly wrote Friday on Twitter. “Ummm…no. Tiffany and I are gonna sit this one out.#NotmyChucky”

Tilly has become a favorite of Chucky fans since she made her franchise debut in 1998’s Bride of Chucky. The actress subsequently returned for 2004’s Seed of Chucky — in which she both voiced Tiffany and played herself — 2013’s Curse of Chucky, and 2017’s Cult of Chucky. Those three films were all written and directed by Don Mancini who wrote the original script for 1988’s Child’s Play and recently announced that he is making a Chucky TV show for SYFY with Channel Zero creator Nick Antosca and longtime franchise producer David Kirschner.

Mancini has also expressed his displeasure with the Child’s Play remake. Last July, Mancini and Kirschner told EW that they had declined the offer to become executive producers on the Child’s Play remake and Mancini said he was concerned that the film would “muddy” the brand. After EW premiered a first look image of the new film’s Chucky, the director responded by posting on Twitter a meme of Mariah Carey holding a sign which read “I don’t know her” along with the message “THIS IS ALL I HAVE TO SAY ON THAT SUBJECT.” (The meme was inspired by an interview Carey once gave on German TV in which she claimed to be unaware of the existence of pop rival Jennifer Lopez.)

Directed by Lars Klevberg (Polaroid) and from a screenplay by Tyler Burton Smith based on the original 1988 movie, the new Child’s Play follows a mother who gives her son a toy doll for his birthday, unaware of its more sinister nature. The film stars Aubrey Plaza, Brian Tyree Henry, Gabriel Bateman, Beatrice Kitsos, Ty Consiglio, and Carlease Burke. Child’s Play is produced by David Katzenberg and Seth Grahame-Smith, who oversaw last year’s remake of It.

“I was just 12-year-old when the ’88 movie came out,” Grahame-Smith told EW last year. “It scared the hell out of me. I watched it again and again. It’s a special movie for me.”

The Child’s Play remake is being produced by Orion, which has the rights to the 1988 film. Mancini and Kirschner control the rights to make sequels to that movie.

Tilly’s tweet was presumably prompted by the release of the first trailer for the Child’s Play remake on Friday morning. Watch that trailer, above.
