The Pokémon Company and Game Freak announced two brand-new Switch titles, Pokémon Sword and Pokémon Shield, via Nintendo’s online platform Wednesday. Sword and Shield will be the first mainline Pokémon RPGs developed specifically for the Switch, since 2018’s Let’s Go Pikachu! and Let’s Go Eevee! were remakes of Pokémon Yellow.
The seven-minute Pokémon Direct announcement, hosted by Pokémon Company President and CEO Tsunekazu Ishihara, Game Freak producer Junichi Masuda, and director Shigeru Ohmori, focused on the games’ new Galar Region setting and revealed Sword and Shield’s three new starter Pokémon.
Trainers in Galar will be able to choose between the curious grass type chimp Grookey, the timid water type lizard Sobble, or the energetic fire type rabbit Scorbunny to start their journeys. Galar itself is a diverse region containing everything from industrial cities to open plains to snowcapped mountains.
Pokémon Sword and Shield are scheduled for release in late 2019, and Ishihara promises more Pokémon news to come this year. For those who absolutely can’t wait for more of their favorite monsters, a new trailer for Detective Pikachu (in theaters May 10) also dropped this week.
