One of Hollywood’s leading redheads has claimed she was given the pink slip while preparing to shoot a major 2019 Oscar contender.
Appearing on Thursday night’s episode of Andy Cohen’s Watch What Happens Live talk show to promote her new film Gloria Bell, Moore responded to a question about why she exited the Marielle Heller-directed Lee Israel biopic Can You Ever Forgive Me? — which she boarded in April 2015 — before cameras rolled.
“I didn’t leave that movie, I was fired. Nicole fired me!” Moore admitted, referencing the film’s Oscar-nominated screenwriter (and initial director) Nicole Holofcener. “I think she didn’t like what I was doing. We’d just been rehearsing and doing pre-production, and I think her idea of where the character was different than where my idea of the character was, so she fired me!”
Representatives for Holofcener, Heller, and distributor Fox Searchlight did not immediately return EW’s request for confirmation on Moore’s claims, though Holofcener previously told IndieWire Moore exited the film six days before production was to begin, which led to a lengthy delay as the project unraveled.
“I felt I had already made it,” Holofcener told the publication. “Every outfit, every location, every actor cast. It was a labor of love. It was traumatic. Terrible.”
As Heller took the reins, the part of Israel went to Melissa McCarthy, who scored her second Academy Award nod for playing the real-life biographer-turned-forger in the dark, critically lauded film that traveled the festival circuit before landing three overall nods from the Academy in January.
“I haven’t yet, because it’s still kind of painful,” Moore said when asked if she’d seen the film, which also stars Richard E. Grant as a devilishly charming con man who helps Lee with her criminal endeavors. “I love Melissa McCarthy. I worship her and I think she’s fantastic, so I’m sure she’s great!”
Moore also noted that the incident marked only the second time in her life that she’d been fired from a gig.
“The only other time I was fired was when I was working at a yogurt stand when I was 15. So, yeah, it felt bad,” she said.
Still, another Oscar nomination could soon be on the horizon for Moore; Gloria Bell arrived in theaters Friday (following a healthy showing on the 2018 film festival circuit) to some of the best reviews of the 58-year-old’s career.
