Jon Gruden and the Oakland Raiders have been “super impressed” with former Ohio State quarterback Dwayne Haskins while doing their homework on prospects for the 2019 NFL draft, according to CBS Sports’ Jason La Canfora.
Oakland is scheduled to pick fourth and owns three of the top 27 picks in this year’s draft.
Incumbent starter Derek Carr still has four years remaining on the five-year, $125 million extension he signed in June 2017. Michael Gehlken of the Las Vegas Review-Journal reported earlier this week that the odds of the team taking a signal-caller with a top pick are “remote at best.”
But if Haskins is on the board when the Raiders go on the clock, he could give them something to think about.
Haskins put on a show in his lone season as the starting quarterback in Columbus, leading Division I in passing yards (4,831) and passing touchdowns (50) while completing 70 percent of his passes.

While leading the Buckeyes to a 13-1 record, a Big Ten championship and a Rose Bowl victory, he also finished third in the 2018 Heisman Trophy voting.
Not only does Haskins have arguably the strongest arm of his draft class, but at 6’3″ and 231 pounds, he has NFL size.
Gehlken noted that the Raiders are more likely to try to surround Carr with talent in the first round rather than replace him.
The Haskins connection could become moot, though, as the ex-Buckeyes star is viewed as one of the top two passers in the draft. While there has been recent speculation that he could fall in the draft, there are three teams ahead of Oakland in the draft order, presenting three opportunities for Haskins to go off the board before Gruden and Co. ever get a chance at him.

Oakland’s trio of first-round picks gives the team resources to work with should there be a player it feels strongly enough to want to move up for. With the draft being held on Thursday, April 25, the Raiders have one week to make up their mind about Haskins, and subsequently Carr.
