Rian Johnson is pulling the curtains back on a murder most foul.
The director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi stopped by Lionsgate’s CinemaCon presentation Thursday in Las Vegas to tease his next project: the murder mystery Knives Out. Johnson and stars Ana de Armas and Jamie Lee Curtis took the stage to introduce the film as a “family gathering that turns bloody very quickly” and goes off the rails.
Daniel Craig stars as a Southern detective investigating a killing at the manor house of an eccentric family. The starry cast also includes Chris Evans (playing the son of Curtis and Don Johnson), Lakeith Stanfield, Toni Collette, Katherine Langford, Michael Shannon, Christopher Plummer, and Jaeden Martell.
“I’ve been a diehard Agatha Christie fan since I was a teenager,” Johnson told the audience. “Sharply drawn characters, suspense, twists and turns, humor — for me, a good whodunnit has all of those things. It’s a genre that I deeply, deeply love, and Knives Out was my attempt to take everything I love about a good Agatha Christie whodunnit, jam it into a movie with an all-star cast, give it a Hitchcock-thriller-like twist, and set it in modern-day America.”
The trailer shown to the CinemaCon audience (yet to be released publicly) saw Craig interrogating the family members as they bicker and keep secrets from one another. The deceased appears to be the grandfather of the family, as Curtis’ character says, “How was the party prior to my dad’s death? … It was great.” In another scene, Evans argues with relatives including a sassy Langford, telling them all to “eat sh—.”
“It’s a twisted web, and we’re not finished untangling it, not yet,” Craig’s detective says, to which Evans quips, “What is this, CSI: KFC?”
Interestingly, the trailer is set to “Live and Let Die,” Paul McCartney’s theme song for the 1973 James Bond film of the same name and perhaps a little nod to Craig’s other life as Britain’s favorite spy.
Curtis described the film as “the rarest combination: a script you can’t put down, written by a director and filmmaker who’s at the top of his game, with an international, multigenerational ensemble cast and a family gathering that turns bloody very quickly.”
Johnson added, “I’ve been cooking this thing up for a long time — like 10 years I’ve been working on this story.”
Knives Out hits theaters Nov. 27.
