Netflix has given After Life a new lease.
The streaming giant announced Wednesday the Ricky Gervais-created comedy-drama series will return next year for a six-episode second season.
In addition to creating the project, Gervais also wrote and directed each season 1 episode, across which he stars as a widower who contemplates suicide before deciding to live long enough to punish the world for his wife’s cancer-related death.
“I have never had a reaction like this before. It’s been insane. And heartwarming,” Gervais said of the renewal via press statement. “But now I have to make sure the second season is even better so I’ll probably have to work much harder than usual. Annoying really.”
Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos added: “After Life has moved audiences from laughter to tears around the world and we are thrilled to announce that Ricky Gervais will be back with a second season on Netflix. We are so proud to play host to Ricky’s brilliant stand up comedy, specials, original films, and series and join in the joy of the fans with his latest hit.”
After Life season 2 premieres on Netflix in 2020.
