Fresh off her Golden Globes win, Patricia Arquette has scored another trophy — and once again used her time on stage to send a message. At this year’s Screen Actors Guild Awards, she won Best Actress in a Limited Series for her work in Showtime’s Escape at Dannemora, and after thanking her team and costars, she made sure to thank special counsel Robert Mueller, who is overseeing the Department of Justice’s investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election and possible links to the Trump campaign.
“Thank you, Robert Mueller and everyone working to make sure that we have sovereignty for the United States of America,” Arquette said as she wrapped up her speech, to cheers and applause from the audience.
That wasn’t the only order of business she tackled in her acceptance speech. After noting that the number of actors who worked on Escape at Dannemora went on for six pages when she visited it earlier in the day, she asked the actors in the audience to keep an eye out for fair pay. “Some production companies are not paying people their overtime and their meal penalties, so start taking pictures of your schedule and your call sheet, because actors depend on that money to survive,” Arquette said. “We have to stop that practice.”
She beat out Sharp Objects’ Amy Adams and Patricia Clarkson, as well as The Assassination of Gianni Versace’s Penelope Cruz and Maniac’s Emma Stone, to win.
In the gritty miniseries about the 2015 maximum-security prison breakout by two incarcerated murderers in upstate New York, Arquette stars as Joyce “Tilly” Mitchell, the married prison employee who had sexual affairs with both men and aided them in their escape. It’s a twisted story, to be sure, but Arquette has said the stifling isolation of a prison environment probably led to the drama. After all, she and the cast filmed on the set itself and saw what it was like firsthand.
“People are starved for connection when you have a limited cast of players trapped in this place together,” she previously told EW. “I couldn’t wait to get out.”
As for the SAG Awards themselves, Arquette had been nominated six times before this latest nod, winning once for Outstanding Supporting Actress for her performance in 2014’s Boyhood.
